One of Australia’s most critically acclaimed and in demand young tenors, JOHN LONGMUIR was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. 

 

John’s operatic studies took place at the Australian Opera Studio.


His awards encompass all of Australia's major competitions, having won the prestigious Herald-Sun Aria, the Opera and Arts Support Group Scholarship and the inaugural Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award. In 2019 he was nominated for his first Helpmann Award, for his portrayal as the Captain in Berg's Wozzeck, for Opera Australia.
 

After making his professional debut's as Ismaele in Nabucco, in Tokyo and La Naissance de Venus, in Berlin, John was invited to join the Opera Australia young artist program, where he made his Sydney Opera House debut, as Almaviva, in The Barber of Seville. 

 
For Opera Australia (as a principal artist) John has appeared in over 500 performances, in a wide repertoire, spanning some 30 roles. Most notably as Tamino in The Magic Flute, Narciso in Il turco in Italia, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Camille in The Merry Widow, Almaviva in The Barber of Seville, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Fenton in Falstaff, Beppe in Pagliacci, Pong in Turandot and many others. John regularly appears, as a guest artist, with Australia's other major arts companies.
 
Also in high demand on the concert platform, highlights include: Peter Grimes with The Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Carmina Burana with The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the New National Theatre Tokyo, Elijah with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Bach’s Mass in B minor with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Handel's Messiah with Royal Melbourne Philharmonic, Christchurch City Choir and Akimoe Momiji Symphony, Rossini's Stabat Mater with West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Handel's Israel in Egypt with the Berliner Cappella and Faure’s La naissance de Venus at the Konzerthaus Berlin.
 
In 2012 and 2014, John was invited to sing Grimoaldo, in concert performances of Handel’s Rodelinda, under Richard Bonynge. The ABC released the performances as a live commercial recording.

 

In 2018 John was invited to appear, as a judge, on the first season of channel Seven's singing competition show All Together Now.
